Meet the Designer: Matt Jones

Here at Tom Smith our designers and creatives work all year round to design beautiful Christmas crackers, wrap and cards. But when it’s the middle of Summer, it’s great for us to share a bit more about our staff and their other talents! First up, here’s Matt, our Studio Graphic Designer. We asked him for a few fun facts about himself to share.

Matt on his background:

I’m originally from a small town in north Wales with an extra long name (Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwyllsantasiliogogogoch! yes that is it’s full name) I moved down to Cardiff a few years ago to go to Uni to study animation. I spent a few years in the animation industry working on CBBC kids tv shows as a designer and then found a job here at I.G!

What’s your role at Tom Smith and how long have you worked here?

My role here is a designer. I’ve been at I.G for almost 3 years which has gone by super fast. My main role here is to design childrens characters although over the past few years I have been expanding my design abilities to encompass other styles of design such as typography.

What’s your favourite part of your working day and why?

The favourite part of my working day is getting a new brief and being able to start sketching. Its great being able to explore in several directions as a new brief is so full of potential. It’s also nice to be able to work with a pen and paper instead of a computer for a while too!

What do you most enjoy doing/creating in the Tom Smith range and why?

As Tom Smith is our own brand its good to be able to work on the range as whole. Its great being able to take a character or pattern and see how it works over a bag, wrap and a card to create a co-ordinating range.

What do you like to get up to in your spare time?

I love to exercise especially rock climbing! If I’m feeling a little less energetic I enjoy calligraphy, its something my dad and grandfather have all done so it feels nice to carry on the family hobby.

What’s your favourite part of a good old-fashioned Christmas dinner?

Lighting up the christmas pudding!

What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?

When I was about 10 I was given an ENORMOUS art box full of pencils, pastels and watercolours. It was almost bigger than I was at the time and could barely carry it upstairs to my room, but it really cemented my love of drawing. I still have it at my parents house.

As well as designing children’s characters for our popular products, you can take a look at some of Matt’s other design work here:
