This week it’s the turn of Creative Manager Esther Young to tell us all about herself in our ‘Meet the Designer’ blog.
A little bit about Esther, in her own words.
I am Welsh through and through! Born and bred in Cardiff … I love City life, and the convenience of being able to drive to The Bay, the countryside, or to one of South Wales’ beautiful Beaches. I am never without my little 2 year old shadow, who makes me laugh everyday!
I have been in the Christmas Greetings Industry since graduating from Cardiff Met (which was UWIC in my day) and have worked for both suppliers and retailers.
Not many people know this, but I once presented a Children’s Christmas TV show for ITV Wales. Christmas really is in my blood!
What’s your role at Tom Smith and how long have you worked here?
I have worked here for nearly 5 years, and offer Design Managers creative guidance and support when developing exciting new ranges.
What’s your favourite part of your working day and why?
My favourite part of the working day is seeing a concept/idea develop into a new design or product. I love the buzz of the Creative Studio, and the diversity of talent that we have under one (very large) roof!
What do you most enjoy doing/creating in the Tom Smith range and why?
I most enjoy seeing the range creatively develop as the team start to build the range each year. I love the excitement that generates as new designs replace old, and the range is given a fresh new look each year.
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
In my spare time I usually have a few ‘upcycling’ projects on the go, and can often be found rummaging in local Charity Shops, haggling for a bargain for my next project. My spare time is also ‘Family Time’, and nothing makes me happier than a lazy weekend with all my favourite people!
What’s your favourite part of a good old-fashioned Christmas dinner?
Without a doubt, it’s the whole family being together! … oooh, and pigs in blankets!
What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
When I was about 5 years old, I had my heart set on a cuddly Polar Bear (which was almost as big as me at the time) My best Christmas morning ever, was unwrapping the soft white fluffy animal, who was instantly named ‘Pudding’. 28 Years later, ‘Pudding’ is one of my little boy’s favourite toys.
