News From Tom Smith, inventor of the Christmas Cracker
This week, we were delighted to discover that Tom Smith appears alongside Sherlock Holmes in the December 1891 issue of the Strand Magazine!
We fondly refer to the way we look for pieces of our history as the “Tom Smith Treasure Hunt”. Recently, we were delighted to receive this beautiful Tom Smith cracker, in pristine condition, from Jill Wood. Her grandmother sadly passed away at the great age of 97, and Jill found it in her loft, and got in touch with us to see if we would like to add it to the Tom Smith Archive.
For 150 years, Christmas crackers have been a traditional part of our Christmas festivities; Tom Smith having created this wonderful addition to our Christmas dinner tables in 1847, acting on the inspirational sound of logs crackling on an open fire.
